Start with the Eight-Hour Pre-Assignment Course
New York requires first-time security guard applicants to complete the Eight-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards before seeking work as a security guard.
At Radiant, this course introduces the basic elements and functions of the security guard position and includes a school exam at the end of class.
Complete the NYS application and fingerprinting steps
After training, applicants submit the Employee Statement and Security Guard Application to the New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services.
Applicants also need fingerprinting through Idemia IdentoGo. Radiant helps students understand the paperwork, required fees, and mailing process before the application is submitted.
Take the Sixteen-Hour On-the-Job Course
The Sixteen-Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards must be completed within 90 days of employment as a security guard.
This course builds on the pre-assignment class and is part of the required training path for maintaining eligibility in New York's security industry.
Keep the license active with annual training
Security guards must complete the Eight-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course for Security Guards every year to keep their license in good standing.
Radiant also offers free annual in-service training for eligible students and veterans when seats are available.
